Post The UN is powerless and should be

In a speech responding to Bush's appearance before the UN on tuesday, leftist Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez had some pretty bold words about America, the UN itself and the state of all the biggest ticket issues around the world. The UN in its current form "doesn't work", he said. Iranian president Ahmadinejad (who is a supporter of and supported by Chavez) echoed these statements saying, "As long as the UN Security Council is unable to act on behalf of the entire international community in a transparent, just and democratic manner, it will neither be legitimate nor effective".

I don't think many people have faith in the UN anymore. Whether you're a staunch Bush supporter and don't like the way they tried to stand in the way of Bush's warmongering (or whatever you want to call it) or whether you're someone like me who just sees that they are incapable of making decisions for everyone if they don't attempt to help everyone. Basically I don't think the world is ready for a United Nations that wields the kind of power that the current UN wants to. They want to be the arbiters of war and trade around the world. But the number of UN representatives who have the mind of the UN first in theirs are slim. Most people, in the guise of working as part of the UN, are just trying to serve their own country's agendas. And there's nothing wrong with trying to help your own country, but we can't keep calling it an impartial body. It's so partial that it's barely cohesive at this point.

The UN can't do anything about situations that it finds troubling, but that's a good thing. If the UN were actually able to decide on something and act on it, I'd be extremely wary about the whole situation. When that many people with such drastically different agendas agree on something, it can only mean trouble.
